No one can be really sure of what exactly it takes to get on top of the search engine results. There are a multitude of factors involved. However, it has been established for a fact that all search engines value the importance of links.

Since it’s clear that links are important, the question is ‘do directory links count as well?’ Well, this is to quote another pointer from Google’s Guidelines for Webmasters:
Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.

Google’s guidelines state that you should submit your site to relevant directories. What makes a directory relevant to your site? Well, there are a number of general directories out there that include sites from all categories. So would these directories be counted as relevant directories? Well, they would to a certain extent, if there was an available category related in some way to your site’s theme. Placing your link in a relevant category in a general web directory will help search engines categorize the main theme of your site and the link would count, to a certain extent, in influencing your search engine rankings.The basic premise is that while submitting your site to general web directories will not harm your site in any way, the directory links will on the contrary help build your site’s link popularity which can only be more helpful than harmful in your search engine ranking efforts.

Given the fact that most general web directories are free to submit to and there being quite a few directory submission services that will help save you the time in submitting your site, there isn’t any real reason for you not to have your site submited to our directory.

A link farm is mere collection of links with no set categories under which the links are placed. Anyone and everyone can submit their links and there is little or no editorial review of these links. In essence, these links have been built for the sole purpose of manipulating the search engines and not designed for the end user. One can identify a link farm from its link pages, where there are hundreds of links on one page and all of them linking to out sites of various topics. There is basically no meaningful purpose or intention behind the links on the page.

A web directory, on the other hand, is not only a collection of links but the links have been categorized under relevant topics and sites are listed only after they undergo editorial review. Directories are useful to the user in that if a user wanted to find a site under a particular topic, it would be easy to go to the appropriate category and choose from the selection of links. All links in a web directory are well-categorized and meaningfully sorted out. Not every link that is submitted to a directory will necessarily be listed as there is always some kind of supervision over the links allowed in a directory.

Having a link on a link farm wouldn’t be counted for much, if at all, by the search engines while having a link on a web directory would definitely count for more value. It’s advisable to avoid having links on the so-called “FFA” or “Free For All” Links pages or any pages where there seems to be no order and flow in the way the links are displayed.

A link to your site would count only if it’s possible for the search engines to “read” or “detect” the link. When submitting your site to a web directory, you’d want to make sure whether the link you get from the directory would be counted by the search engines. The links shouldn’t be javascript-generated

If you view the coded section of the links page and see that the links are being displayed in a coded format other than the standard <a href=”></a> format, then there’s a good chance that the link is being displayed through a script, which would again not be counted by the search engines.

The links shouldn’t be re-directed
Some directories link out through indirect links, e.g. <a href=”http://www.webdirectory.com/link.php?link_id=53”>Website</a>. These types of links are not valuable as they’re not direct links to the website.
